School House Garden Plan

Image
I can't help myself but make plans.  The instant we bought The School House, I made big plans in my head for it.  It is so fun to dream.  This is my current vision for the next phase of The School House... that's right, a Barn! Before we get to that, I'll review what we already have going on on the School House Property.  I planted lots and lots of daffodils last fall, so we're anxious to see them come up in the next few weeks on "daffodil hill" as we've dubbed it.  I also planted about 36 peony tubes last spring.  We had the hottest and driest summer, so I'm not sure how they faired.  Again, I'll be anxious to see if they come up... or not.  We planted a line of lilac bushes along our fence, along with a wisteria I'm hoping will take hold and grow down the line.  We planted 6 Limelight Hydrangea (sun friendly) in the front, and 6 Nantucket Blue Hydrangeas along the side of the school house that faces the gravel road.  Hoping our neighbo...

Our New Outdoor Furniture | Ballard, Signature Hardware, Pottery Barn & Hayneedle

This will be our fourth summer in our house since we re-built it.  We had plans of new outdoor furniture the minute we moved in, but the interior took priority - we did need a sofa and kitchen table, after all.  Then, each year that passed, we sort of got comfortable with the furniture we had.  It was fine.  Sure the old love seats we had on the porch didn't have great cushions, and the wood was sort of rotting a little.  The picnic table was great, too.  We could squeeze 8 for dinner and it was easy for kids to get in and out of.  But it wasn't that comfy for adults.  And, because of the set up it created an awkward conversation barrier for those sitting on the love seats on the porch, since half of the people at the picnic table had their backs to them.   This year, I determined that we had waited long enough.  As soon as spring showed up (little by little), we would have nice, new, grownup outdoor furniture.   In Mike's perfect w...

Potted Salad Garden - It's time!

Image
Potted Salad Garden It is that time again : )  I'm sharing this with you now, because inevitably in a couple of weeks when I show this pot overflowing with fresh greens ready for picking, you will all say - 'I wish I would've done that!'   This photo is from last year's Lettuce Pot.  Ours will look like this in just 3 weeks. This past weekend we planted our "Salad" Garden in one of my big pots on the gravel patio.  It is the easiest gardening idea that we repeat year after year.  Emma does all of the planting and she is always eager to go and "harvest" some lettuce, spinach or arugula for dinner.  It regenerates throughout the season - giving us no excuse not to enjoy a fresh salad every night. We planted : Arugula Spinach Leaf Lettuce Baby Micro Greens I am looking forward to planting the rest of our garden in the weeks to come.  Since we have lots of land to work with at the School House, we'll be putting in a large garden there. ...
