Breakfast Hostess Gift | Banana Bread and Honey Butter

Image
It is important for us to be as gracious of a guests as you are when you’re the one hosting the party.   When you’re invited to someone’s home for dinner or a party, it is always appropriate to bring a hostess gift - the obvious choices being flowers and wine. When I’m hosting a party, while I appreciate these sort of gifts, I’ve already arranged my flowers and have selected wine to serve.  So when I’m the one giving the hostess gift, I like to think about what the host would really appreciate- something she can look forward to enjoying after the party is over.  Because your host has likely spent a great deal of time and energy preparing for the party, breakfast the next day is probably the last thing from her mind.  Wouldn’t it be so nice for her to wake up tomorrow morning after an evening of entertaining to a special treat waiting for her in the kitchen?  Create a breakfast basket filled with homemade (or home-packaged!) goodies like moist and dense bana...

Lemon Scones

Image
I know that posting a scone recipe is no surprise for me.  However this is one of my tricks, I really believe that you don't need a million different recipes, just a few that you can alter each season or occasion.  These scones are the simplest that I make (except maybe vanilla ?).  Just a basic recipe with a little lemon zest, then smothered in a buttery lemon glaze.   Do you want to know the best way to enjoy this?  Before you put the glaze on, slice it in half and smear blackberry or strawberry jam, then put the top back on then top with the glaze... great for dessert.   Lemon Scones 8 scones  2 cups plus 1/4 cup flour 1/4 cup sugar 1 tablespoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon sea salt 12 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, small diced 2 extra-large eggs, lightly beaten 1/2 cup cold heavy cream 1 tablespoon of lemon zest ..... 1 cup confectioners' sugar 2 tablespoons of butter fresh lemon juice In a mixer, combine flour, sugar, baking powder...

Homemade Eclairs, Chocolate Glazed with Vanilla Custard

Image
Homemade Eclairs Yesterday I went down to The School House and made lunch and eclairs for the girls.  It is fun for me to get out to the country once every couple of weeks to pop-in and enjoy the fun work environment.  It is also fun for me to put the blue kitchen to work.   Emma and I first attempted the eclairs a couple of weeks ago before she went back to school after Christmas break in preparation for the Valentine's Collection.  We'd been watching The Great British Baking Show and been drooling over the eclairs they'd made.  We whipped these up and they were some of the best things I've had in months.  The luscious pastry cream filling, the chocolate glaze, the overall gooey-ness.  Just so yummy and not as heavy as our typical treats - brownies and cookies.   They hug the line between breakfast and dessert, so would be a great choice on Valentine's Day as a special treat in the morning.  Make the shells and custard the day before (shell...

Chocolate Glazed Baked Donuts

Image
Last week I started a "Homemade Celebrations" series.  Basically, my theory is that instead of running out to buy everything for your family's celebrations, try your hand at making instead.  The philosophy isn't about making life harder, but more simple.  It isn't always more simple or better to make it yourself - in which case, yes! go out and buy it.  However, I think we needlessly get intimidated by things like making simple flower arrangements, baking birthday cakes, etc.  It isn't that hard and it can be so much fun to do it yourself. I love good bakery donuts, but they are so hard to find.  I want them fresh, I want them warm and I want them no too sweet.  Frying homemade donuts is not something I want to do very often... maybe 2-3 times a year.  However, I've finally perfect a baked donuts recipe that is so yummy - tender, soft, fluffy.  The best part is that you can make the batter ahead of time,  Scoop  it in a  Dispos...
